Knowing my shapes

Sophie is very proudly showing the class her knowledge of 3D shapes. She can name most basic ones, and explain how to find out how many faces each shape has. She is then using this knowledge to help build a 3D castle.

Magic 10

The class have been doing some magic in their maths lesson. We have been finding lots of different ways of making 10 with only two numbers. We found out that there are quite a lot of ways of making 10.

Measuring

Sophie and Chi Mai are working hard to measure different things around the classroom. They were both very careful to hold the tape measure correctly and would check with each other to make sure they agreed on the measurement.

Tap It!

Sophie and Pristine began by using this activity to make the same shape arrangement.  After that they tapped out different shape arrangements.  Sophie was able to point out and remember the names for a circle, triangle and square.

Maths area

Sophie was playing "Number Lotto" with her friends. She could count the objects up to 10 and recognise the numbers to match with the  objects.

Let's make some aliens!

For our Maths activity, we set up a Do-it-Yourself alien where the children could add different features to the alien such as eyes, nose, mouth, teeth, arms, legs and antennae. After adding the different features, they were encouraged to count the number of features they added.

Sophie was able to match match some of the numerals and quantity correctly. She also know that numbers identify how many objects are there in a set. Sophie is also beginning to count objects by saying one number name for each item.

Maths area

Sophie played with the abacus with me.  I asked her to point to the coloured beads and to count them one by one.  Sophie could identify the different colours and also counted from from 1-10!  Well done, Sophie!

Popping Shapes

Sophie had a fantastic time playing with a new IWB game!  By moving and pressing the wand, she popped the shapes that were similar to the one on the centre of the screen.  With some adult support, Sophie was able to complete more than 1 round of this game.  Well done Sophie for knowing your shapes!

Comparing Bears

Sophie independently went to the Maths Area and had a go at playing with the Compare Bears.  She chose a pattern to complete, and got the correct bears from the sorting tray.  With minimal adult support, she was able to complete 1 pattern.  Well done Sophie!

Constructing a High Tower

Sophie had a good time at the Construction Area today.  With the Duplo pieces, she constructed different tall structures.  When I asked what she was making, she said "tower!".  I then asked, "Is it a high tower?"; and Sophie said "High tower!".  Afterwards, Sophie got a Lego sheep piece and put it on top of her tower.  Whilst doing this, she said "Put, put, put!".  Great work Sophie!

Calculator

Sophie chose the calculator from the continuous provisions in the Investigation Area. She joined me and Linh Lan in the Mathematics table and started pressing the numbers on the calculator. She then recited numbers 1-10 whilst pressing random numbers.

Fish alive!

Sophie had a fantastic time today at the Investigation Area. She took a fishing net and used it to explore the fish tank. Ms Precious started singing the 'Fish Alive' song and Sophie joined in saying by copying some counting words. She said 'One. Two.' What a great start!
